New Acoustic Screed Combo for Top Dubai Development
Flowcrete’s pioneering screed and sound-proofing combination system has been specified for a large scale installation in the Middle East.
The global flooring company – which has its headquarters in Sandbach, Cheshire - has secured a project to install Isocrete Acoustic K at the luxury Fairmont Palm Residence Hotel and Resort, being built within the exclusive Palm Jumeirah Development in Dubai.
This is the latest success for Flowcrete in the Middle East, which last month announced it had won its largest ever contract - involving the installation of its car-park decking system Deckshield - at the Jumeirah Lakes Towers Development, also in Dubai.
At the Fairmont Palm Residence Hotel and Resort, Acoustic K is being installed in all 558 of the deluxe apartments, across 23,000 square metres.
Flowcrete Middle East Managing Director Andrew Gwyther said, “This is a significant achievement for us and we are proud to be involved in such a prestigious development.
“The developers and architects were keen to ensure that any noise generated within the apartment buildings was not transferred to occupants below or above. This unique screed system will help achieve that.”
Acoustic K combines noise-reduction efficiency with the proven performance of Isocrete screeds, which have been used in house building projects across the UK and across the globe for almost 40 years.
Flowcrete launched Acoustic K last year for the UK market – where it is designed to take the strain out of compliance with Approved Document E for house builders – as well as internationally.
The system complies with Building Regulations, is approved by the British Board of Agrément and offers a weight-saving reduced screed thickness. It also allows for an early installation of floor finishes over the substrate.
In the UK it can be installed as part of Flowcrete’s unique Floorzone solution – which includes the screeds, combined with Isocrete Acoustic K and Isowarm underfloor heating, as well as Flowcrete’s range of seamless floors.
With the Floorzone concept, the entire floor - involving screed, soundproofing, heating and finish - are designed and supplied by Flowcrete and installed by one Flowcrete-approved contractor.
Alan Dean, sales director of Flowcrete in the UK, said: “Isocrete Acoustic K is a complete system, not just components, and has been brought into the market with an emphasis on a quality installation.
“Test results from independent sources show it achieved results well in excess of the requirements set out by Approved Document E, of the Building Regulations 2003.
“The system will deliver peace of mind for house builders that they can achieve a high acoustic performance and performance screed, with just one contractor responsible for the entire procedure.”

How to convert camera videos to Blu-ray movies and burn it on Blu-ray Discs
Did you always record scenes with your high-def video camera on family or wedding or other parties, and want to watch it anytime? Would you like to back up precious holiday memories as high definition discs? It will be also great to enjoy them with high quality and large screen, for example, to watch them on your HDTV.
Here is a tutorial illustrating how to convert camera videos to Blu-ray movies and burn it on Blu-ray Discs.
What You Need:
High-def Camcorder: or called HD Video Cameras, used to record HD videos for fun, such as Sony HDR-XR100E and Cannon HF200.
One piece of blank Blu-ray Discs: Insert a blank Blu-Ray disc into the computer’s drive.
Blu-ray Disc Burner: Sony unveils BWU-100A Blu-ray burner, for example.
Blu-ray Burning Software: Sothink HD Movie Maker
Step 1: Transfer Camera Videos to PC
Attach the camera to PC and transfer the video from the camcorder into PC.
Step 2: Add and Edit Video
Add Files
Launch Sothink HD Movie Maker. Selecting “Add Files” from File in the Menu or directly clicking button “Add Files” on the Toolbar, a dialog pops up for choosing movie files to the program. You can add more than one movie file at one time.
Trim Video
There is a window on the bottom of the program for previewing the video added in. You can click button “Play” to preview your source video and, if you just want to burn a part of video content into Discs, you may realize it with Trim function:
Select the video you have added into the program, go to “Edit” - > “Trim” function, and then you can decide which part can be burnt by dragging the left/right slider to set start/end time.
As the picture showing above, drag the left triangle to a position you want it be the start of the converted video and drag the right triangle to a position you want it be the end of the converted video. Then the video will be trimmed before being converted.
Set Disc
After you’ve finished adding files and editing video, it’s time to set the recording parameters and burn to disc. This is the tricky part, as it’s the only step of the process where things can go very wrong.
Go to General Settings or Advanced Settings panel and do some settings for the disc.
Under tab “Settings”, there are four general setting items in the Settings panel:
Target disc size: Click the arrow and select the target disc size from the drop down list.
There are four options: “DVD-5 (4.7G)”, “DVD-9 (8.5G)”, “BD-25 (25G)” and “BD-50 (50G)”. Since it is to burn the video on Blu-ray Disc, here choose “BD-25” or “BD-50.
Tip: If the video size is less than 8.5G, you may burn the video onto DVD and create AVCHD movie on DVD discs, which also needs to be played on Blu-ray player.
Disc label: Write the label here for the disc.
The default label is the current date. Here you can input other words for the disc.
Video dimension: Click the arrow and select the target video dimension from the drop down list.
There are three options: “1280*720?, “1440*1080? and “1920*1080?.
Video frame rate: Click the arrow and select the target video frame rate from the drop down list. There are two options: “25 (PAL)” and “29.97 (NTSC)”.
Tip: “PAL” (short for Phase Alternating Line) and “NTSC” （short for National Television System Committee) are the two standards of TV broadcast.
Step 3: Start Video Burning
Make sure the checkbox besides the video file(s) you want to burn is been ticked. If there is none movie ticked, the program prompts when starting burning. When all the checkboxes are ticked, the movie files added in will be burned following the order of the file list.
Select “Burn” from File in the Menu or directly click button “Burn” on the Toolbar, and then it starts burning:
Note: If there is no disc in the drive, it pops up a dialog for prompting and HD Movie Maker automatically creates a folder for saving temporary files.
The burning function requires Windows XP SP2/Windows Vista SP1 or above versions. If the system doesn’t meet the requirement, HD Movie Maker will automatically create a standard folder to store the generated Blu-ray movie.
Sothink HD Movie Maker supports multiple CPUs and multiple core CPUs, and supports concurrent conversion for multiple videos with high speed
Step 4: Play Blu-ray Disc
When the burning is completed, you may enjoy the high-def BD video on HDTV with various Blu-ray players, for example, Sony PS3.

Gaming With Projection Screens Blows You Away.
The first time I played a computer game on a projection screen, it was totally accidental. I was setting up the audio-visual system in a hotel ballroom, for an office event to be held the morning after.
As I figured out the proper distance between the white mounted screen and projector to produce the optimal gain, and coordinating with the audio technicians, my colleague opened a pc game and left the room. Having finished the setup, I sat down by laptop and started tinkering around with game.
It was then that I realized a humongous game screen was in front of me. As I blasted the little furry fellows to bits, the audio system of the ballroom also came to life.
My eyes goggled. My heart raced. The normally cute (read: lame) game took on a different level of excitement! I was totally blown away with the size, the rich colors and the volume of the game on the projection screen.
The combined visual and audio overload left me smitten with the experience.
If you close your eyes and imagine yourself playing your favorite simulation game, and find your favorite characters much bigger (maybe as big as you are), with clear colors, and less eyestrain (than when playing on your regular HDTV) wouldn’t you give it a go?
What do you need to game this way? Aside from your gaming unit, of course
- Projector. A lot of projectors can be rigged to your gaming unit. Ask your electronics dealer for details
- Clear audio system. Surround yourself with the game music. Sound should be as clear that you can actually inhale the sound
- Space. You need space to set up your screen and projector, and space to hang out and jump around as you win.
· Projection Screen. Comes in different set-ups, sizes and materials that will suit your preference and space situation. Fixed Screens – perfect if you have space specifically allotted for gaming and watching movies. Fixed screens are installed in one place and left ready to use anytime
· Motorized Screens – space savers. Casing (with rolled up screen inside) is usually installed on ceiling or high up on the wall. Does not block the view until the screen is to be used. Every time you will play your game, just press a remote control button to let the screen out. After you are done playing, press the button again for screen to roll up uniformly and neatly
· Manual pull down screens – Can also be mounted in one place, and when needed, just reach up and pull down the screen.
· Pull up screens – Very handy and portable. Screen is kept in a base casing when in storage. When it is game time, pull the base casing out of storage, set up in desired place on the floor, then pull up the projection screen.
Projection screens come in 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. 4:3 aspect ratio is similar to viewing TVs and pc monitors. 16:9 is similar to viewing cinema movies.
Gain is the brightness in the middle of the screen. A gain of 1.0 is the standard measurement, because viewers can view the same brightness as it is first projected to the screen.
Screens come in gray and white. Gray absorbs ambient light better, dark colors seem darker, thus contrast is higher. A lot of games have dark colors or uses black a lot, so a gray projection screen may be desirable for gaming. White, however, is classic and can be used just as effectively.
